Has anyone built or heard a guitar using Cambodian Rosewood. It is incredibly beautiful,dense, heavy, etc. What did/do you think of looks and sound. I'm leaning toward an addi top (snagged from Shane during the big OLF joint sale. |

I was wondering the same thing as I could find it in the wood bible.....there is a builder in Hawaii who had some pics of a completed guitar, but he refered to it as Cambodian also...... |

No Larry, Dalbergia barensis. Cochinchinensis is more magenta in color-for me a shame because the color of barensis out colors BRW and from the photos I have seen barensis' figuring is supurb. I think it is also known as SE Asian Rosewood. Seller stated that the Cochinchinensis is the 'Asian Rosewood' sold by LMI years back. For some reason, probably the explosive nature of Cambodian government, Both became extreemly rare-to a degree, it still is. |

Cochinchinensis comes in a variety of colors and figures from what I've been able to purchase. Some of it looks like coco bolo even. Mine came directly from Cambodia a few years back. Bariensis also goes by the name "ebony rosewood". The export opportunities from Cambodia are wicked unstable at best. One never knows who's palm to grease from day to day and watching your container loaded on the ship isn't the end of the worry. A friend had two containers off loaded in Hong Kong and simply stolen on their way to CA. He flew to Hong Kong, but didn't have enough money left to "buy" them back. |

Isn't is ashamed it has all come to this with most exotic woods? The sad part is that the so-called greasing has nothing to do with sustainablilty and reforestation IMVHO. |

This is going to be vague, which I apologize for: not long ago, on another forum, there was a discussion about cambodian rosewood. It was said Kathy Wingert built a guitar from it, and it was outstanding...but then you have to wonder if the wood was outstanding, or Wingert is outstanding. Don't know about the former, but the latter is well established. You might give her a call to see what her opinion of it was. Bill |
